Cycling in Italy - Day 3: Lecce to Giuggianello

16 / 07/ 2013

Cavallino

Woke up about 09:00 a.m. and started cycling to the south.
The first village that you go by, going down, is Cavallino.
A small suburb so close, you can't really tell if you're still in Lecce.

Cavallino

This time I'm not taking the highway, but I try the provincial roads.
So quiet and peacefull, like the appetite of an anorexic model or the sex life of a politicians wife.
I occasionally meet a passing car, every half an hour or so.
The next check point is a village named Martano.

I couldn't resist and I started shouting in Italian "Vote for Silvio, Silvio loves you".

Again: who cares about kilometers? Just show us which way.

Buongiorno Martano
Martano: check.
I'm half way there.
Next stop: Castrignano Dei Greci

Friendly entry point, welcomes you also in the remaining Greek dialect.

Since the hot South-Italian sun was having an orgasm above me, I couldn't stay and explore Castrignano even though I wanted to. So, in modern Greek dialect, "pira to mpoulo" (got the fuck off).

My Alter Ego for this summer

After another 40km, 4 hours and numerous litres of water, I arrived in Giuggianello. One of the most hospitable little villages of Southern Italy. Here I will take part in a project concerning Parco Paduli, a rich rural area which the locals are trying to reform and also promote the idea of people and nature living together. It sounds generic and philosophical, but locals from all 5 villages that consist the Parco Paduli area, are working for this on a daily basis. I will try to post more info about it. Have a first taste here.

My friend Alberto, also serving as the project's photographer.

Day 3 continues.
